dc.description.abstract-translatedThis paper explores all manners of depicting fairy-tale characters in Czech phraseology and points out out what qualities, actions, states or conditions are usually attached to them. Idiomatic phrases are divided into 30 thematic classes and further structured semantically. The excerpted items refer to fairy-tale characters in and out of fairy-tale contexts, in addition to phrases which may feature mythical beings but as a whole describe other things. It transpired that in many excerpts referring to fairy-tale creatures, it is impossible to discriminate the mythical context from outside reality, namely with characters existing both in fairy tales and the real world (e.g. a king). Idiomatic expressions in both contexts often thematise attributes common to characters from both surroundings. Therefore our evaluation of mythical beings is based on excerpts from the two contexts on condition that it is a generic, not individual, reference. Propositions about singular items thus remain an integral part of the compiled corpus but they are excluded from the final evaluation. The same applies to expressions referring to the reality beyond, which not only enhances the value of this paper but surprisingly constitutes what, in our mind, is the most interesting find of our research.en
