dc.description.abstract-translated“In fact, the field of AL has been plagued by self-doubt, identity crisis, and fear of fragmentation since very early on in its history.”† Nevertheless, despite that applied linguistics seems to be a very productive field and the term has been widely used in many contexts, particularly in terms of foreign language learning. Where are then the origins of the whole concept and what might lie at the root of the aforementioned self-doubt, identity crisis or fear of fragmentation. What sort of relation does applied linguistics have to its mother field, i.e. linguistics, or, regarding language learning, to the didactics of foreign language learning? Is there any sort of hierarchy, correlation or perhaps rivalry? The present study aims to discuss these and other related issues. We will focus on the gradual definition of the concept of applied linguistics, the mutual relation of the individual related disciplines as well as possible drawbacks and controversies of this process to be finally able to answer our initial question, i.e. is applied linguistics as an academic field of study securely anchored or has it become too unstable and wobbly.en
