Abstract: The study aims at getting the Czech reader acquainted with the specifics of the German legal language on the background of general characteristics of specialist style in German. The author begins by comparing specialist language terminology in Czech and German linguistics and explaining basic differences. In the next part, she gives a survey of the basic lexical, morphological and syntactic characteristics of specialist language in German without discriminating between the specifics of individual disciplines. Then, she moves on to characterise the language of a selected field – law. In this example, instances of equivalence and difference in this specialised language are demonstrated through comparison with the general characteristics of specialist language. Differences apply mainly to the different frequency of use of selected language means, which is connected, among other things, with the specific function of legal texts in the life of a society compared to other fields of human activity.
