Abstract in different language: This article is a study into the ability and inability of structure words – namely prepositions, conjunctions, particles, interjections, parenthetic words, pronouns, numerals and linking verbs – to form evaluative derivatives. Although it is a verified fact that the category can be represented derivationally, most research works explore the category of evaluation from the axiological point of view and on a lexical level. Other studies in this field focus on the issue rather fragmentarily. This explains the topicality of our research. As there is no commonly used term to describe the derivative meaning of evaluation (in contrast to axiological evaluation in lexicology), we face the necessity of using the term “evaluation unit” (i.e. to characterize and appraise a subject’s merit). In this research an “evaluative unit” comprises all derivational lexemes labelled in the explanatory dictionaries as “diminutive”, “hypocoristic”, “augmentative”, “intensive”, or “softening” as well as those which label different emotional shades and parametric features. The presented article attempts to analyse derivative and evaluative semantics of structure words exemplified by various available lexicographical sources and texts. The findings of the study show the ability and inability of structure words to form evaluative derivatives; they allow us to classify the studied derivatives; they examine the methods of their derivation; and they determine characteristics of the affixes which were used for the analysis of motivation units.
