dc.description.abstractČlánek pojednává o tragickém osudu advokáta Samuela Nagela, který spáchal sebevraždu v srpnu 1887. Mladý a nadějný právník, který zbohatl výhodným sňatkem a dědictvím po matce a tetě, s tímto majetkem nenakládal správně. Touha zvětšit bohatství a vytvořit dojem bohatého právníka ho vedla k zapojení do některých podezřelých obchodních transakcí, do padělání směnek, podvodů a zpronevěry. Jeho dluhy rostly natolik, že mu nemohli pomoci ani jeho bohatí příbuzní. Samuel Nagel se proto rozhodl ukončit svůj život spácháním sebevraždy. Nezapomněl na svou manželku a dceru, v jejichž prospěch sjednal pojištění u New York Insurance Institute. Pokus získat další odškodnění od pojišťoven, které odmítly vyplatit odškodné v případě sebevraždy, selhal, přestože se snažil, aby jeho úmrtí vypadalo jako přirozená smrt. Nechť je životní tragédie mladého advokáta varováním pro právníky současné, přestože k ní došlo ve druhé polovině 19. století.cs

dc.description.abstract-translatedThe article deals with a tragic fate of an attorney Samuel Nagel who committed suicide in August 1887. The young and promising lawyer who became rich by advantageous marriage and by inheritance from his mother and aunt didn’t treat these assets properly. The desire to multiply the wealth and to create an impression of a wealthy attorney has involved him in some suspicious business transactions, in counterfeiting the bills of exchange, frauds and embezzlements. His debts have grown so much that even his rich relatives couldn’t help him. Samuel Nagel therefore decided to end his life by committing a suicide. He didn’t forget his wife and daughter in whose favor he arranged an insurance with the New York Insurance Institute. The attempt to gain additional indemnity from insurance companies that refused to pay the indemnity in the case of a suicide failed even though he tried to make it look like a natural death. Let the life tragedy of the young attorney be a warning for current lawyers even though it occurred in the second half of the 19th century.en
