Abstract in different language: The primary interest of this study is the policy of Henry John Temple, Viscount Palmerston and Klemens Wenzel Lothar Nepomuk, Prince von Metternich‑Winneburg in the Papal States between the years 1830−1832. Main thesis is based on the fact that the Austrian Chancellor was a dominant person promoting in the Holy See reforms expected to bring prosperity for Pope’s regime. The rivalry between Metternich and Palmerston for this issue deepened the rift in foreign affairs between Great Britain and Austria for the whole dec- ade of eighteen thirties.
