Abstract in different language: The study summarizes available information about construction development and history of the predecessors of Holešov chateau – the medieval castle and Renaissance chateau – from the 13th century to the third quarter of the 16th century. The medieval and early modern phases of Holešov have been almost unnoticed by existing literature. Holešov castle is first mentioned in 1300 as a seat of local fiefdom nobility, the most notably of which was the Sternberg family from the 14th until the 16th century. By the turn of the 15th to 16th century, the castle was significantly rebuilt and more construction activity was carried out in the second half of the 16th century, when the late gothic castle was reshaped into a Renaissance chateau.
