Abstract in different language: | The authors of this study focus on analyses of milk traces preserved in the form of organic residues on potsherds dated to the Neolithic and later periods. Commercial immunological tests for analyses of protein allergens in cooked food were used to detect milk remains. By using this approach, it was possible to determine the type of milk used in cooking, and specifically that some Neolithic pots from the Czech Republic contained bovine milk, whilst others were used for goat milk. The abundance of milk in the human diet requires the ability to digest it. This ability is not distributed evenly across past and present populations. We therefore conclude with a discussion of the current state of knowledge in this field of research. |
