Abstract: The aim of the project is to develop light and low-cost parts such as carrier beams or pillars. Parts made from expanded metal have been designed for this purpose. The expanded matel is produced by cutting and tensile expanding of sheet metal. Thus, its mass is lower than it is usual for steel sheets and concurrently it is cheaper than sheets made from nonferrous metals. Experiments are being performed with expanded metals made from CSN 11321 and high strength TRIP steels. To enable the prediction of the load capacity of parts made from expanded metal, mechanical data of this material have been measured using common mechanical tests. The results of mechanical tests (tensile test, compression test and 3 point bending test) are being compared with numerical models. Basing on this approach, complex structures can be designed and produced from expanded matel parts.
