Abstract: | Reverse engineering addresses the problem of creating a CAD model for an existing physical object. In the data aquisition phase of the reconstruction process a discrete set of points into segments that form the basic elements of B-rep model for 3D object. In this paper we consider the important question of how to obtain a consistent orientation of the segmented model. For thid three deifferent methods are presented that are based on the following principles: orientation propagation, orientation via the boundary curves and orientation induction from surrounding 3D space. for these three strategies a detailed description of the corresponding alkgorithms on the segmented model are given. The performance of these methods for several benchmark objects are discussed. |
